We settle by the blazing fireside and then Sarah hands me an enormous glass of white wine and I take a gulp.

‘Did Vivian and your mother not want to join us?’ Jamie asks.

‘I didn’t invite my mother. She’d be horrified by all this drinking, so I thought it best not to. But I invited Vivian, and she said, this is for us girls to let our hair down. She likes to be in bed by ten with a cup of lemon and ginger tea, bless her.’

‘That worked out well for us, because she has Daisy at Greystone,’ says Nathalie. ‘Daisy loves staying with her grandma and was so excited.’

‘Oh yes, of course, what with Seb being away with the boys, that did work out well. Who’s looking after Sophie? It must be tricky to get away now you have the two of them.’

‘It’s a full-time job, that’s for sure,’ says Nathalie. ‘But I love it. Sophie is growing so fast, and Daisy adores her fortunately.’

Her face glows as she speaks and I think if I’m even a quarter as happy as she is in marriage, I’ll be a fortunate woman.

But Nathalie and Sebastian married for love. It’s one of the most romantic love stories I’ve ever heard. Nathalie was Daisy’s Parisian nanny. I was at their wedding, and it was such a moving ceremony. Their heartfelt vows made me cry.

I mustn’t confuse my situation with a genuine love match, or I’ll be forever disappointed I didn’t marry for love. That’s not on the horizon for me and I must get used to it, or I shouldn’t have agreed to marry Caspian.

Great friendship and spicy sex are going to have to be enough.

What if Caspian tires of me and the sex isn’t so hot once we’ve been married for a while?

The thought flashes into my mind unbidden before I can stop it, and I’m immediately pulled into despair. The wine isn’t helping. I can be emotional when I drink, and we’ve been drinking on and off all day.

‘Are you okay?’ Jamie asks, touching my arm as we sit by the roaring log fire in the big drawing room of the old castle.

I nod. ‘Yes, of course. I suppose I’m just feeling emotional, what with the wedding looming and so much change ahead.’

‘It’s a lot,’ says Jamie. ‘If there’s anything I can do to help with the wedding, do let me know. It was madness on the lead up to ours and I remember feeling so overwhelmed.’

‘Thank you for being one of my bridesmaids. You’ve all been so much help already, and Sarah has everything in hand. You must be busy with your book by the sounds of it.’

‘I am,’ says Jamie. ‘The book launch is finally coming up and I’m terrified!’

‘I love your book. I’m sure it’ll be a massive hit.’

‘God, I hope so,’ says Jamie. ‘I’m already writing the next one in the series.’

‘What a creative lot we are,’ says Marian.

‘And on that note, it’s time to get into our costumes,’ says Sarah, appearing in the doorway, her eyes sparkling.
